CONCLUSION - The Game And The History

Golf, the great game, or so it has been called over the years. Once the pleasant pastime of a few gentlemen in rural Scotland, golf is now a worldwide, multi-billion dollar industry. The crude wooden sticks first used as clubs have become high-tech instruments designed for specific purposes and specific situations. Club refinement has progressed to the point that some golfers have a particular club that will be used only a handful of times during a season because that club is for “trouble” situations only.

Golf balls have long been a hot topic of discussion with amateur and professional golfers alike. Companies stake their reputation on certain internal construction, types of covers and dimple patterns. How much difference this makes in the score of an amateur is debatable. It may indeed make some difference to a pro. The debate about which is the best golf ball is not likely to end any time soon.

Golf courses seem to spring up in or near communities large and small. Adventurous designers and builders have put golf courses in some of the most beautiful and some of the most isolated place on earth. In fact, this is one of the greatest attractions of the game. The beauty of a golf course can literally take you away from reality for a short time.

For most of us, golf will remain a weekend sport, a few hours spent with friends enjoying the outdoors. We will continue to struggle with improving our game and, if we are lucky, will find the answers to a few of our questions. Professionals will continue to hammer the ball, draw the ball and roll the ball with uncanny skill. As amateurs watch this display, they will dream of doing the same when they get to the local course on Saturday or Sunday.

Through it all, the gentleman golfers of Scotland, and the men and women who have nurtured this great game, will smile. Dozens of quotes and comments have been made about golf through the years, most of them spoken with a touch of resignation. Mark Twain called golf, “a good walk spoiled.”

But perhaps former pro Gardner Dickinson said it best, “They say golf is like life, but don't believe them. Golf is more complicated than that.”
