A Newbie'S Intro Into The Rules Of Golf
Learning from the Pros The best way to become acquainted with the rules is simply to follow the golf rules that have been put forth by the official golfing organizations in this country. However, save yourself a massive headache by checking out these helpful guidelines that will help get you grounded in the game. After all, the official rules of golf that are published by the R & A and the USGA are more than 100 pages in length! Who has time for all that reading? The official PGA of America hosts a very helpful introduction to golf rules on their official web site. That is recommended reading for any prospective golf player. Ask Someone To 'Adopt' You into the Game If you are interested in learning to play golf, there is a good chance that you already know someone who is well familiarized with the rules of the game. If this is the case, ask that person to 'adopt' you. That is, ask them to become your unofficial teacher. Most people are glad to help out a newbie, and that person will be able to help you get familiar with the rules. However, take the time to at least become familiarized with the basics. Don't rely on one person to teach you everything you need to know. Much of the important lessons, as with any other type of endeavor, can only be learn through trial and error. Learning the Rules of the Game Here is a very short and incompletely compendium of golf rules that any newbie should become familiar with. These are by no means complete. They are simply provided here to help you become grounded in the basics and become more familiar with the basic terminology of the game. Playing in Order This is one of the most fundamental rules. In golf, you have to play the holes on the course in order. That means that you will be either playing 1 through 9, or 1 through 18, depending on how many holes you have agreed to play. Technically, your committee can change the order, although this is very rare. Match Play - What Is That, Anyways? Even if you have never played golf, there is a good chance that you have heard of match play. But what is that, exactly? Match play simply means that each hole you play is considered a separate contest. That means that if you win at the first hole, you are one up from the rest of the group. However, if you lose at the hole, you are one down. How do you know you have won the hole? You know you have won when you are more up than you are holes down. What About Stroke Play? Stroke play is the other common way to play; it is mutually exclusive from match play. Stroke play means that the person with the lowest score in total is considered the winner. In stroke play, you have to play your ball until it has been put into the hole before you can move on to the next hole. Rules Concerning the Clubs and Ball In general, players are not allowed to carry more than fourteen clubs at once. Golf balls should not be changed during play, unless the ball becomes damaged. During the course of a match or during play, asking for advice is not allowed, nor is practicing during play. |
