A Quickie Guide To Buying Pre-Owned Clubs
Inspect the Shafts Closely One of the first things to inspect when you are looking over a pre-owned set of clubs is to check out the shafts. If the shafts are graphite, look for worn areas, including indentations or bending. These are signs that the graphite shafts may not be able to do the job. In general, avoid worn graphite shafts because it could mean trouble later. If you are not sure, you can test the torque of the shaft by twisting the head and grip in opposite directions. Look for good resistance; otherwise, the shaft may have become weakened. As for steel shafts, these are known to be heavier than graphite shafts, and very durable. If the pre-owned clubs have steel shafts, look to see if each club feels equal in weight. Also, make sure the steel shaft is not bent. Inspect the Club Heads Closely Another key part of the club is the club head. When you are inspecting pre-owned clubs, take a good look at the club heads. You should look for wear on the club head. If the club heads reflect a small shiny spot on the club head then that means that it has likely been in use for a long time. Try to avoid these shiny-spotted club heads because chances are that they will not be able to hold the ball as efficiently as a newer club head. What about the grooves on the club head? Are they still well defined? Avoid worn club heads with edges that are not well defined. Also avoid club heads with noticeable indentations. These can definitely affect how your ball flies on impact. Do All the Clubs in the Set Match? This is an important consideration. Take out all the clubs from the bag and line them up to see how they match. Do they all look like they belong in the same set? Try to avoid a pre-owned club set with various shaft types, models, lengths, weight, etc. Buying a mix or match set may seem tempting if the price is right, but you may end up having to buy missing clubs in the future. Avoid the hassle and purchase a good pre-owned golf club set that offers all the clubs you may need. How Do You Know You Are Getting a Good Deal? This is an important question to ask yourself as you shop for a set of pre-owned clubs. Most of the time it will be obvious if you are getting a bargain but sometimes it is not so clear if you are truly getting a deal. Before you hand over your money for a high quality pre-owned golf club set, make sure to check if the same or a similar set is not available new for the same or near-same price. This can definitely happen if the manufacturer decides to discount new sets due to a high inventory. |
